$200,000 Partnership Development Grant advances field of disability research in Durham Region

Research shows that children and youth from equity-deserving communities experience health care differently from their peers. Sometimes these experiences are affected by multiple identities, such as race, gender or disability. Together with Ontario Tech University, Grandview Kids hopes to better understand the barriers, biases and inequities faced by children and youth with developmental concerns when they are waiting and accessing paediatric rehabilitation.

To help address these critical societal issues, Grandview Kids and Ontario Tech University secured a $200,000 Partnership Development Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). This funding will help advance the field of childhood disability research, strengthening the ongoing collaborative efforts of Ontario Tech University and Grandview Kids, which formalized a partnership in February 2023 to advance research, innovation and education in Durham Region.

Partnership Development Grants support formal partnerships between academic researchers, community organizations and other partners that will advance knowledge and understanding on critical issues of intellectual, social, economic and cultural significance.
The grants allow partners to design and test new approaches to research and its real-world applications, foster valuable research relationships and networks across sectors, and provide hands-on training for students and new scholars.

The SSHRC funding will enable the partners to conduct research that will help shape the future of culturally-safe care at Grandview Kids and beyond. The three-year project is titled, “Building knowledge and understanding of the intersection of race and disability in accessing pediatric rehabilitation services.”

Dr. Meghann Lloyd from Ontario Tech University and Dr. Taryn Eickmeier from Grandview Kids are Co-Directors for this research. Dr. Lloyd is also the Senior Research Associate for Grandview Kids, while Dr. Eickmeier serves as an Adjunct Professor at Ontario Tech University.
Co-applicants include: Dr. Robert Balogh (Ontario Tech), Dr. Lesley Jacobs (Ontario Tech), Janicka Auguste (Grandview Kids), Maritza Basaran (Grandview Kids) and Yvonne Mais (The Regional Municipality of Durham).

This SSHRC-funded research study is the next focus for Grandview Kids and Ontario Tech University’s formal partnership, amplifying the organizations’ shared objective to co-create ethical, sound research that is clinically-relevant and community-informed. The partnership also enables further exploration of experiential learning opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students, joint research activities across different faculties, academic and non-academic programming, innovation, and entrepreneurship that connects students and faculty with the community, and builds new engagement and outreach across Durham Region and beyond.

Together, Grandview Kids and Ontario Tech University are contributing to cutting-edge science that will advance clinical and educational opportunities for the children of the future.

On September 23, we recognize and continue to raise awareness of the use of sign languages around the world, the importance of protecting the linguistics surrounding it, and respect for deaf individuals and their culture. Today there are over 300 different sign languages used globally within the Deaf communities. For this, we celebrate ‘The International Day of Sign Languages.’

This day is not only significant to deaf individuals but also to those who are allies in the Deaf community. Here at Grandview Kids, I take great pride in being an ally by educating others about the Deaf community, being an advocate for equality of language rights and sharing my knowledge of using American Sign Language (ASL). In 2019, I graduated from George Brown College with the American Sign Language and Deaf Studies Program, which taught about past and current social issues the Deaf community faces, how to communicate through ASL, and provided practical opportunities to connect Deaf individuals within the surrounding community.

In my role as a Communicative Disorders Assistant at Grandview Kids, I am able to share my ASL skills and experiences with clients, families and colleagues working in the Infant Hearing Program (IHP) and Preschool Speech and Language Program (PSL). This unique language allows for inclusive learning and can include a total communication approach, meaning finding communication methods that work for each individual, which can include ASL signs.

Within a session, I can connect with caregivers, families and clients to provide and model specific ASL signs/words to support clients’ communication for requesting, commenting and protesting, as well as provide a language-rich environment that can transfer outside of the sessions to daily opportunities. Supporting clients’ independence and confidence to communicate through ASL, watching vocabulary grow and develop from sign approximations to 1-word signs and move into 2+ word signing combinations is something I am grateful to watch and experience.

ASL will continue to be an ongoing learning journey for me as I grow personally and professionally, which I am proud to share within Grandview Kids!

September serves as National Sickle Cell Awareness Month in the United States of America. Sickle Cell Awareness Month aims to raise awareness and support research about the disease, and although it’s not officially recognized here in Canada, many sickle cell advocacy groups celebrate the month regardless. Sickle cell affects the oxygen-carrying protein hemoglobin, which is found in red blood cells. This results in stiff, sickled red blood cells that have difficulty flowing through blood vessels.

When my parents were told I had sickle cell disease when I was just six months old, they probably couldn’t predict the profound impact the inherited blood disorder would have on my life. Sickle cell can result in a wide variety of health problems, including anemia, fatigue, swelling in the hands and feet, and attacks of pain called “sickle cell crisis.” Those with sickle cell are also more vulnerable to strokes, bacterial infections, and organ damage due to lack of blood flow.

From a very early age, I took steps to mitigate the impact of sickle cell disease. I always drank plenty of water, ate healthy, and avoided extremely cold environments that might trigger a pain crisis. Like many other people with sickle cell, I depended on medications such as folic acid, antibiotics, and hydroxyurea to keep my hemoglobin levels high and boost my immune system. Throughout my childhood, I received care from the dedicated red blood cell clinic at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. It was there that I encountered children who also had sickle cell for the first time. I realized some of these children had more severe cases of sickle cell and required more medical intervention such as blood transfusions, surgery, and frequent long hospital stays away from home.

When my sister Rhea, who is nine years younger than me, was young, she also had more sickle-cell-related complications than I did. As a result, she underwent monthly blood transfusions, frequent trips to the hospital, and even surgery to remove her spleen when she was just two years old. My sister, now fifteen, lives a life relatively free from sickle cell complications due to the care she receives at SickKids, but I still remember the impact sickle cell had on her when she was younger. Many children with sickle cell miss important days, milestones, or opportunities due to sickle cell complications. Weeks spent at the hospital are weeks without friends, school, or extracurricular activities. It can be a very isolating experience, and I often struggled to explain the full impact of sickle cell to my friends and teachers. To many of my peers, I simply didn’t “look” sick or like someone who would need health accommodations. Education about sickle cell disease is limited, and many people are ignorant about the disease.

This is why it’s important to support sickle cell awareness and social support for those with sickle cell disease. Because sickle cell mainly impacts people who are of African, Caribbean, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, and Indian descent, we also face challenges like discrimination and medical racism that hurt our ability to receive proper care. Groups such as the Sickle Cell Awareness Group of Ontario and Camp Jumoke help fight the stigma against sickle cell and boost opportunities for Ontarians with sickle cell.

Today, I am twenty-three years old and living a happy and healthy life with sickle cell disease. I still sometimes suffer from complications and pain, but I have been helped greatly by the hematology experts at SickKids and Toronto General Hospitals. They are dedicated to helping sickle cell patients live full and healthy lives. Proper support and care make a world of difference for those living with a disability. Our Family Engagement Team (FET) is comprised of caregivers to Grandview Kids clients and former clients (grads), who use their lived experience and specialized training to support other parents, caregivers and clients in their journey. Caring for a child or youth with physical, communication or developmental needs can leave some caregivers feeling isolated and alone. By offering peer support, mentoring and education from individuals who have first-hand, personal experiences, we are cultivating an authentic, non-judgmental environment where families feel empowered, understood and supported.

Grandview Kids is a leader in Family Engagement, building the premier program within Ontario’s Children’s Treatment Centre (CTC) sector, which has garnered national and international recognition. We are one of few programs of this kind in Canada.

The Family Engagement Team is integrated into the multidisciplinary care approach at Grandview Kids, supporting our Complex Care Program, Ontario Autism Program and Adolescent Transition Program. We also offer Family Engagement services through Online Parent Support (OPS) pages, help with filling out paperwork and funding applications, caregiver education sessions and coffee chats, and our lending ‘Resource Library.’

In addition, our Family Leader Program – comprised of all those who serve as Grandview Kids ambassadors, advisors and advocates – is overseen by our Family Engagement Team; this includes our Family Advisory Council (YAC), Youth Advisory Council (YAC), Working Groups and Ambassador Program.

One key thing the Family Engagement Team does is host events and networking activities throughout the year to support Grandview Kids clients and caregivers. Popular ones include accessible Trick-or-Treating, Sensory Santa, Resource Fair, Park Playdates and Youth Meetups. These events provide amazing opportunities for parents, siblings, clients, family members and others to meet people who share similar experiences. Adolescent Transition Launch Event

We officially launched our Adolescent Transition Program on August 3! Thanks to TD Bank Group for its support to get this program up and running.

For a long time, Grandview Kids has witnessed the gap in support and resources that occurs when our clients transition from our care (as kids and adolescents) to adult care. Teens and their caregivers consistently tell us it feels like “falling off a cliff” when their paediatric support system is no longer accessible. Grandview Kids knew we had to bridge this gap, and help prepare families for the uncertainties that lay ahead.

Our new Adolescent Transition Program will provide the much-needed support to families that are aging out of services at Grandview Kids. It was co-designed by Parent Advocates, Youth Advocates, as well as members of Grandview Kids’ Family Engagement, Clinical and Client Services, and Medical teams. This integrated approach puts the family voice at the centre of program development.

Our August 3 launch event included remarks from Grandview Kids CEO Tom McHugh, reflecting on his own family’s experience moving from paediatric to adult developmental services. Attendees participated in fun games like axe throwing (the safe kind!), while others sat down to get a custom, Grandview Kids tattoo (the fake kind!). Our new Transition Checklist was revealed. But all around, we heard from many older clients and their caregivers… the sense of relief that we were re-focusing on supports for adolescents during this critical, and sometimes overwhelming, period of their lives.

We look forward to hosting more Adolescent Transition education sessions, youth hang-outs and workshops in the fall. Stay tuned!

Complex Care Program Networking Event

We are pleased to report on the successful launch of our first ever Complex Care Family Engagement event, held on July 27. This event resonated deeply with caregivers, parents, siblings and grandparents, providing an avenue for meaningful interactions and shared experiences.

The occasion comprised a range of engaging activities, each contributing to the overall sense of enjoyment and relaxation. Family Engagement Program Coordinator Natasha’s artistic touch adorned faces with beautiful and creative face painting. The generosity of Station Gallery in Whitby – who provided the art supplies, and the creativity of Kerry and Jessica – who were extra patient and caring with the children, brought forth a world of amazing artwork by some children. Volunteers, Akash and Shayaan, arranged recreational games, creating an atmosphere of joy and fun for the children. Siblings were seen interacting and making new friendships.

The heart of the event was the informative session on self-care, facilitated by Peer Navigator Jacki. Caregivers absorbed valuable insight in recognizing and acknowledging the importance of attending to their own well-being amid their demanding responsibilities with their children who have complex medical needs.

A few parents expressed the necessity of such gatherings on a regular basis. These moments of connection provided the platform to share stories, support one another, and discover a network of empathy and understanding.

Adding an enchanting touch, Tulip the mini therapy horse arrived, bringing an abundance of smiles, hugs and warmth. Peer Navigator Sujay, who has exceptional photography skills, took awesome photos of everyone having fun with silly props. The pictures captured how much fun families had together.

As we reflect on the event’s impact, family engagement is inspired to continue holding events to promote a supportive network for families facing unique challenges. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who contributed, attended and lent their support, making this event an unforgettable success.

Park Playdates

The FET brought clients, caregivers, siblings and families together every Tuesday this summer, hosting playdates at Grandview Kids’ playground. Despite some rainy weather, each week’s playdate included a themed activity. From creating dinosaur fossils, to tie-dying t-shirts, and even a visit from Tulip the Therapy Horse, FET’s Park Playdates offered something special for all kids and their families.

Our Park Playdates not only provide an opportunity for kids to interact and play together, but also foster a sense of community amongst Grandview Kids parents and caregivers. It’s a place for connection and fun. Throughout the summer, the Park Playdates reached record numbers of attendance, with joyful cheer and excitement filling the atmosphere week-after-week. The playdates organized by FET are a testament to the power of play and peer connections.

This past weekend, Ari, our Research Student, had the privilege to represent Grandview Kids at the national Healthy Youth Summit in Toronto hosted by the Canadian Institute of Health Research-Institute of Human Development, Child and Youth Health. This impactful event took place over one and a half days.

Ari shares her experience below:

“As a youth, I was also invited to the youth dinner the night before, where I was able to meet and connect with youth from all across Canada. It was a nice icebreaker before the main event, as this was my first-ever conference!

During this interactive event, researchers and youth advocacies from all over the country shared meaningful thoughts and plans on how youth can be better represented in research. Powerful youth speakers spoke about their experiences and shared how stakeholders can help improve our experience in this field.

We all had a chance to share our own thoughts during the break-out group session, where we spoke about the gaps and opportunities for youth in 6 categories:

Health and Wellness
Leadership and Impact
Innovation, Skills, and Learning
Environment and Climate Action
Truth and Reconciliation
Employment

Breakfast and lunch were provided on both days, and I was delightfully surprised by how good the food was! During meals and breaks, I had the opportunity to connect with other researchers, and I was introduced to ongoing research projects I had never heard of, such as the SickKids CHILD cohort study (13 years in progress)!

I enjoyed hearing about their research and was inspired by all their hard work. As I am relatively new to the research field, it was especially helpful for me as I was able to expand my network and learn about different areas in this field.

The key point that I took away from the conference was that “there is no future without supporting our youth.” Creating new opportunities for youth to get involved is essential for teaching them the required skills in order to advance their careers and contribute to the research field. Maintaining a safe and supportive environment where youth are treated as equals is vital. I am grateful to already have these here at Grandview Kids.

Overall, I had an amazing experience and would like to give a huge thank you to Dr. Taryn, who provided me with this opportunity and has continued to support me through my career!”

July is Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness Month, which focuses on raising awareness about cleft lip and palate. Cleft lip is a condition characterized by an opening in the upper lip. It occurs as early as the first three months of pregnancy and can cause problems with speech, hearing and social development. Grandview Kid Charlie was born with a cleft lip and underwent a successful cleft palate repair surgery early in life, his story allows us to learn more about cleft lip and how it is treated.

The Discovery

It was my second pregnancy and my husband and I went to the standard 18-week ultrasound. The technician said she would be right back with the doctor. I didn’t think anything of it, but my husband was worried. We were informed that Charlie would be born with a cleft lip and palate. I just stared at the doctor for a bit. I knew what that was but couldn’t process it. I just said, “Okay… so what do we do?” The doctor explained that I would need to do some further blood work, a possible amnio, speak with a geneticist, see a fetal cardiologist and set us up with the Cleft Lip and Palate Clinic at SickKids. It was all so overwhelming and it didn’t hit me until I got back to work, which was probably a mistake after receiving news like that. I had to call my husband and I could not stop crying. It was all so devastating for both of us, but all I could think about was how much I already loved our son. I did all the tests, saw all the specialists and we prepared like crazy for this condition before our little boy arrived.

The Journey

When Charlie was born I was so happy to finally meet him! Seeing his cleft lip did not phase me at all. He was my sweet, beautiful baby boy. He needed to be fed with a SpecialNeeds Feeder by Medela, which provides help to cleft palate babies who cannot create a vacuum to drink. We had training on how to use that with the help of the wonderful NICU nurses at the hospital in Oshawa. After nine days in the NICU, he was ready to go home. It was my birthday – best birthday present ever! Once we were settled at home, the countless appointments at SickKids began. The amazing team from the Cleft Lip and Palate Clinic consisted of Plastics, ENT, Orthodontics and Speech. Orthodontics plays a HUGE role in helping cleft babies before surgery! They made Charlie a Nasoalveolar molding (NAM), which is a pre-surgical, custom-made orthopedic appliance that essentially brings together the two sides of a cleft lip or palate close together. The NAM caused Charlie pain as he barely slept for 9 months. Once his cleft lip was repaired, he was pain free and we hired a sleep doula to help him sleep through the night. We highly recommend a sleep doula for babies who won’t sleep!

The cleft palate repair was more invasive. Charlie was in a lot of pain post-surgery. For recovery he needed to eat soft foods for 6 weeks, as well as wear pediatric arm restraints to prevent him from putting his hands in his mouth. Charlie also recently had surgery for a cleft palate extension called a pharyngeal flap. This flap creates a bridge at the back of the throat to help the velopharyngeal valve close and prevent air from leaking through the nose when talking. His recovery from that was awful and painful, but he prevailed. Since these surgeries, Charlie has had speech therapy with Grandview, Holland Bloorview and with a private SLP. He works hard every week to improve his speech and has really learned to enunciate each word slowly.

Along with a cleft lip and palate condition comes ear infections. Charlie has had multiple surgeries to insert ear tubes due to ear infections and bouts of hearing loss. Charlie currently has a retracted ear drum. SickKids is hoping it will heal on his own with the warmer summer weather.

Charlie’s journey is far from over. He will still need different types of surgeries to improve his cleft lip and palate condition, up until he is in his 20s. Luckily we have lots of support from SickKids, SLPs, Charlie’s school and from family and friends!

The Awesome Charlie

Charlie loves to swim, especially at our cottage! Charlie loves to play soccer, baseball and Nintendo. He loves to dance and sing. He loves safari animals and is obsessed with lions. He is also quite the thrill seeker as he loves to ride roller coasters! He is a happy, energetic and creative kid. When he is not building forts or having battles with his toys, he likes to goof off with his older sister, Samantha. His laugh is infectious! Charlie is turning 7 in a few months and already decided that he will be having a Super Mario Bros. themed birthday.

Charlie had a beautiful smile with his cleft lip and still does post repair. We love him so much and are so proud of this brave young boy!
