Volunteer Spotlight – Vicki C.

Volunteering

How long have you been volunteering at Grandview Kids?

I began volunteering at Grandview Kids in 2017 when I retired from teaching. I had had the privilege of teaching children with physical and intellectual challenges for the last 15 years of my career and many of my students had a connection to Grandview Kids. I also worked with a variety of professionals from Grandview Kids who visited my classroom and shared their expertise so that my team and I could develop and implement academic and life skills that would best suit the needs of our students.  I had nothing but positive feelings towards Grandview Kids, and I thought it might be a good fit for volunteering.

What is the best part of volunteering at Grandview Kids for you?

I thought I knew a lot about Grandview Kids from my teaching days, but I had no idea of the scope and depth of the Grandview team or the many amazing children who benefit from their work.

I knew about Speech and Language Pathology, Occupational Therapy, and Physical Therapy, but perhaps my biggest revelation was learning about Recreational Therapy. I love participating in the many recreational therapy group sessions, such as music, movement, and play, and summer camps like bike camp.

I often say that I receive far more from Grandview Kids than I give. The hugs, smiles, and high-fives I get from the kids I interact with and play with are what make me want to come back again and again.

Who inspires you to volunteer or give back?

My son Daniel is perhaps my greatest inspiration to volunteer. Daniel was born with very complex physical and intellectual challenges. We had many therapists in our lives who helped us in so many ways to help Daniel grow and develop to his greatest potential. He passed away as a young child, but had he been able to grow up, I know Grandview Kids would have been part of our lives for sure. By volunteering, I keep Daniel’s memory alive within me and spend time with kids who are as beautiful and special to their families as Daniel was to me.

What would you say to someone who was thinking about volunteering at Grandview Kids?

To anyone who might be thinking of volunteering, I would heartily encourage them to come to Grandview Kids. It is a place filled with hope and positivity, and after you have seen the smiles on the faces of the kids and their parents, your heart will be full.

How long have you been volunteering at Grandview Kids?

I did my Grade 11 co-op with Grandview School, where I was introduced to Grandview Kids. I started volunteering at Grandview Kids in September 2023.

What would you say to someone who was thinking about volunteering at Grandview Kids?

I would tell someone who was considering volunteering at Grandview Kids that it is one of the most rewarding volunteer experiences. I love working with the Team Grandview staff and have gained so much valuable experience.

Has anything interesting happened to you while you were volunteering at Grandview Kids?

When interacting with the kids before their appointments you always get a few laughs and some interesting stories.

What is the best part of volunteering at Grandview Kids for you?

The best part about volunteering at Grandview Kids is working in a team that truly appreciates your time and supports you to gain experience. I have had the opportunity to volunteer with numeous different specialists and groups. These experiences are invaluable when considering a career in speech and audiology. Additionally, the clients never fail to put a smile on my face.

Who inspires you to volunteer or give back?

Seeing how happy the kids are to be there and the enthusiasm of the team is what inspires me to give back.

Written by our Volunteer Manager, Tara C.

Universally, people recognize the contribution of volunteers who are involved in just about every aspect of service delivery in all walks of life. However, volunteering does not succeed in a vacuum. That is why we celebrate International Volunteer Managers Day (IVMD) every year on November 5.

“As Grandview Kids’ Volunteer Coordinator, I am inspired on a daily basis by the level of dedication and support our volunteer team provides.  I am so fortunate to work with such an amazing team of volunteers and staff.

Our Volunteer Manager at Grandview Kids, Tara C.

My role focuses on in-centre volunteering activities and includes recruitment, collaborating with staff on training and development of opportunities, scheduling our team of volunteers, planning communication and recognition initiatives, and evaluating and recognizing volunteer contributions.

At Grandview Kids, volunteers contribute to our successes every day. Our volunteers are comprised of students, retirees, and working professionals and work across the various sites throughout the community that we serve.

Volunteers take on many roles at Grandview Kids. We have in-centre volunteering, which includes Screener/Greeter at the Welcome Centre; assisting with Recreation Therapy groups, Summer Camp, research opportunities, and virtual workshops; and supporting specialized programs such as Free to Read, Courage Beads, and pet therapy visits.

Volunteers also lend their expertise and talents in other areas at Grandview Kids, which include contributing their expertise on a Board or Committee and assisting the Family Engagement Team and Grandview Kids Foundation with special events in our community.

I feel thankful and proud to lead this generous, talented, and motivated group of individuals. I look forward to continuing to grow our Volunteer Program, and the future opportunities that the new build will present for volunteers are very exciting, too!”

What is it like volunteering at Grandview Kids?

What is it about volunteering at Grandview Kids that appeals to you personally?

To me, the most appealing aspect of Grandview Kids is how dedicated everyone is to providing compassionate family-centred care. Volunteering at Grandview Kids allows me to be a part of providing such care to an exceptional group of clients in our community. In addition, volunteering at Grandview Kids has allowed me to work with a fantastic group of clinicians who are always willing to answer questions I may have regarding their specialty.

How has volunteer work had an impact on your life?

Volunteering at Grandview Kids has made a huge impact on my life. I have been able to learn so many different skills while volunteering. My communication skills with children and their parents have improved significantly – you can read all you want about communication skills, but until you apply them you’ll never develop those skills. I have learned so much about prioritizing especially when there is a rush of clients and their families coming in through the door. Lastly, volunteering at Grandview Kids has also helped me understand the importance of establishing and advocating for more pediatric care centres. Facilities such as Grandview Kids are necessary if we want to help children reach their potential.

What has your favourite event or volunteer assignment been with Grandview Kids and why?

I truly enjoyed volunteering at the Covid-19 vaccine clinic organized by Grandview Kids. Helping children overcome their fear of needles was extremely rewarding.

What do you like to do when you are not volunteering?

I recently learned how to swim, so anytime I’m not volunteering or busy with school you can find me at the pool.
