Grandview Kids is currently recruiting individuals to join our Board of Trustees.

Who are we?

Grandview Children’s Centre provides expert paediatric assessment, specialized medical and other treatment and rehabilitation services to children and youth with physical, communication and developmental needs. It is the only children’s treatment centre in Durham Region. Grandview’s work has a broad impact in our community, changing lives daily.

We need individuals who want to help our organization develop and grow to meet the needs of our expanding community and who are aligned with our mission and values.

As we enter the next 5 years of unprecedented growth and build our new facility, we are seeking those with expertise/experience in construction/facility design, information technology, public relations/ marketing, finance, governance and/or childhood disability.

In order to be eligible to stand for election as a Trustee, each nominee must:

1. Be a resident of Durham or in the opinion of the Board maintain a direct and substantial interest in Durham, or, in the opinion of the Board, have the potential to make a significant contribution to the Corporation, and
2. Support and promote the purposes and objectives of the Corporation

The Grandview Children’s Centre Board meets monthly, as do subcommittees of the Board. A minimum of 6 hours commitment per month is required. It is anticipated that members will also participate in agency events.

Grandview Kids is currently seeking a parent volunteer to represent Grandview Children’s Centre on the Durham District School Board (DDSB) Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) for the 2018/19 school year.

In Durham, the Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) helps the Board protect the rights of students with special learning needs. SEAC provides information, advice and assistance to parents/guardians whose children may require additional support. SEAC advises and makes recommendations to the Board concerning the establishment and development of special education programs and services.

Regular SEAC meetings are held ten times per school year and are usually the third Thursday of the month. The meetings are a forum for SEAC members to discuss and provide advice on Board programs and support services for exceptional students. Meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. A brief written summary of each meeting will be submitted to Grandview’s Family Engagement Coordinator.

The Ideal Candidate:

• Be a Canadian Citizen, eighteen years of age or older
• Be a resident of its area of jurisdiction and have a child attending school in the Durham District School Board
• Not be employed by the school board

Note: in addition to the above requirements, all volunteers of Grandview Children’s Centre must submit an application package with 3 character references, and be willing to provide a recent criminal reference check with a vulnerable sector screen and attend ability awareness training prior to the school year start.

The Progressive Conservative, Liberal and NDP candidates running in Durham Region for the Provincial election paid a visit to Grandview Children’s Centre’s Oshawa site recently to discuss key issues impacting Grandview families.

Grandview Children’s Centre Board Chair Brad Phillips, Foundation Board Chair Bryan Yetman and CEO Lorraine Sunstrum-Mann discussed a range of topics including the Special Needs Strategy – specifically school based rehabilitation services, the Ontario Autism Program and the changes being implemented across Ontario, the funding of Children’s Treatment Centres and the construction of the New Grandview.

We wish all the candidates well in their upcoming campaigns.

Grandview Kids – Power of One Award – Nomination Form

We’ve got exciting news to share! Owners of McDonald’s in Durham Region have pledged $500,000 in support of Grandview Kids Believe campaign for a New Grandview Children’s Centre in Ajax.

On May 2nd, 22 McDonald’s restaurants in Durham Region will be supporting Grandview Kids on McHappy Day as their first fundraising initiative.

For those who don’t know, McHappy Day is a nationwide fundraising event where $1 from every Big Mac® sandwich, Happy Meal® and any sized hot McCafé® beverage sold will be donated to Canada’s 14 Ronald McDonald Houses and other local children’s charities across Canada.

Last year, eight McDonald stores across the Durham Region participated in McHappy Day in support of Grandview Kids. This year, on May 2, 22 locations across Durham Region will be supporting Ronald McDonald Houses as well as Grandview Kids.

Grandview Kids’ Physiotherapist Marj Kennelly didn’t always plan on spending her time working with children. It wasn’t until connecting with one patient at Ongwanada (a children’s outpatient centre in Kingston) that Marj’s passion for working with children was sparked.

Kennelly recalls one young patient during her time there who really inspired her.

“All you had to do was look at his face,” recalls Kennelly. “He was so engaging and wanting the attention and wanting you to play and help him figure out what he was going to do. He inspired me to go in this direction, more than anybody else. The kids kind of call to you and you really feel like you could make a big difference for them. That’s what’s moved me to peadiatrics and what’s kept me here.”

Eventually, Kennelly’s life brought her to Oshawa, where she has  worked at Grandview Children’s Centre  as a physiotherapist for the past 30 years

For Marj, stand out moments happen almost every day. One particularly moving story, though, would be Ryan’s. Ryan was a normally developing child who had one major medical event that changed his life and his family’s lives forever.

This family used to spend their summers camping and enjoying the outdoors. After Ryan’s medical event, the family struggled to adapt to this new change. So, Marj decided that she would help them figure out how to continue to enjoy nature.

“We found them a lifejacket that was going to work for him, figured out his positioning in the canoe and since then…they travel with a camper and bring all of their equipment – he has a lot of specialized equipment – they pack it into the camper and bring it with them. It hasn’t slowed them down, they are still out and enjoying the things that they love,” says Kennelly.

Ryan’s mom, Kelly Smigielski, is incredibly thankful for the extra work Marj has put in for Ryan. She says that being able to see Ryan enjoying a paddle with his family again brought tears to her eyes.

“Ryan and Marj have a very unique relationship, one he has not had with any other therapist,” says Kelly Smigielski. “I know that she is always looking out for what is best with Ryan and how everything and anything can be improved to help him move through his life experiences.”

Marj has made house visits to make sure Ryan is moving safely around the house, checks to make sure that his home equipment is properly fitted and even attended his high school transition meeting to lend her expertise to the school team.

So, how does Marj come up with such unique and successful ideas for kids like Ryan?

“I don’t think we have to re-invent the wheel, I think we need to go out and look for people who are doing amazing things and then try and put our Grandview stamp on it and really pull Grandview forward so we can be on the leading edge,” says Kennelly.
