Province announces new Grandview Children’s Centre

News

Ontario is helping children and youth with special needs in Durham region get the care they need sooner by supporting the construction of a new facility for Grandview Children’s Centre

Tracy MacCharles, MPP for Pickering-Scarborough East, Joe Dickson, MPP for Ajax-Pickering and Granville Anderson, MPP for Durham made the announcement on behalf of Minister of Children and Youth Services, Michael Coteau this morning at Grandview. This support will create more treatment spaces, shorter wait times and a modern facility so that families can access the care they need sooner.

Grandview Children’s Centre was designed in 1983 to serve about 400 children per year, but increasing demand — partly due to Durham region’s growing population — means that the centre now serves over 6,000 children and youth each year. The support announced today will help the treatment centre better meet this growing demand.

Grandview Children’s Centre offers a range of services to children and youth with special needs, including occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech-language pathology, social work services, audiology, therapeutic recreation and family resources and support… continue reading

Children’s Treatment Centres (CTCs) in Ontario were originally established to serve children and youth with physical disabilities. Over the past 65 years, this service has fully evolved into a system that serves children and youth with physical, neurodevelopmental, communication and

complex medical needs. Services and supports are provided at home, at school and in the community, based on capacity and local community need.

Grandview Kids, their families and all the staff at Grandview extend our heartfelt gratitude to Al Libfeld, Steven Libfeld, President and CEO of Tribute Communities and Roger Anderson, Regional Chair and CEO of Durham Region for your amazing generosity and for selecting Grandview as one of the charities supported at the 7th Annual Building Industry for Durham Deeds (BIDD) Luncheon on November 1, 2016.  A special thanks also to Lalita Panday for the outstanding work she does to make the luncheon successful and for believing in the work of Grandview Children’s Centre.

On January 18, 2017, Grandview Kids accepted a cheque for more than $113,000 – money raised at the November BIDD luncheon.

Our gratitude extends to the many sponsors, donors and guests who helped contribute to the overwhelming success of the luncheon.

We appreciate your support and generosity very much. Grandview Children’s Centre is often called a “magical” place where the impossible becomes possible, where dreams come true, where kids receive specialized treatment to reach their full potential. With your help we will do even more for children and youth with special needs in Durham Region.

Thank you.

Lorraine Sunstrum-Mann ECEDH, RN, BA, MBA

Chief Executive Officer, Grandview Kids

OSHAWA, ON – Grandview Children’s Centre is committed to providing the best possible care for all children and youth with special needs from across Durham Region. As a result of that commitment, we look for innovative and creative ways in which to expand our services to clients and their families.

Grandview Children’s Centre is pleased to announce the formal launch of our Community Paediatric Associate Model. We have partnered with four community paediatricians, well known in our community for excellence in paediatric care and commitment to improving care for children with special needs and mental health issues.

Grandview’s four new paediatric associates include Dr. Buors, Dr. Mohile, Dr. Campbell and Dr. Montgomery.

The new Paediatric Associate Model will allow Grandview to share care with this group of doctors and help children traditionally outside of Grandview’s eligibility criteria access paediatrics. This model allows for children to be referred to one of our Community Associates to assess and manage their needs ensuring that as children they make gains in their development and no longer need direct involvement from a developmental paediatrician.

These doctors will continue to run independent practices but will now proudly boast a Grandview Associates sign for their office and will work with Grandview to help manage referrals and direct families to the level of care that is right for them.

Grandview Children’s Centre will continue to work with the broad group of excellent paediatricians in Durham Region, and in fact have formed an alliance with this group to work on advocacy related to outpatient paediatric issues for kids with special needs.

This community group joins our existing team of developmental paediatricians; Dr. Siapno at our Ajax-Pickering site, Dr. Knights at our Oshawa site and Dr. Hunt, Grandview Children’s Centre’s Medical Director working out of our Oshawa site. Dr. Hunt also provides clinics at Grandview’s Port Perry location.

Developmental and behavioural paediatrics makes up a huge portion of outpatient paediatrics.

The prevalence of Autism is staggering and the referral rate to Grandview Medical Services is expected to rise to over 1,000 referrals per year in the next year.

“Autism isn’t an issue that can be addressed by one person or agency.  Diagnosis, management and research regarding Autism and other developmental issues deserve a community committed to seamless access to care,” said Dr. Hunt, the Medical Director of Grandview Children’s Centre. “The development of the new Community Paediatric Associate Model moves us one step closer to being able to meet those needs.  As medical director, I am thrilled to have such a highly qualified core team of developmental paediatricians and I’m incredibly proud to branch out to now include our very talented community paediatricians who have demonstrated that they are committed to the same vision and values as Grandview. I look forward to working with them to build innovative ways to serve the children and families.
