Empowering Your Child to Understand and Manage Emotions
The Interoception Self-Regulation Group helps children improve their ability to recognize and manage their emotions by learning to understand how emotions feel in their bodies. Many children struggle to connect physical sensations, like a racing heart or tight stomach, with emotions like anxiety. This group teaches children to identify these body signals and use strategies to feel more comfortable.
Based on Kelly Mahler’s Interoception Curriculum, the group focuses on developing interoception—our “8th sense”—which helps us feel what’s happening inside our bodies. By building this awareness, children gain better emotional regulation and self-control. This group is perfect for children needing extra support with emotional awareness and self-regulation.
Goals may include:
- Explore lessons to understand how their body, emotions, and actions are connected.
- Take part in interactive activities to recognize body signals in different parts of the body.
- Discuss how specific body signals relate to different emotions and why they happen.
- Learn and practice strategies to help regulate their emotions and feel better.
Your child/youth is likely to benefit from the program if they:
- Have difficulty connecting body signals to emotions
- Struggle to identify coping strategies for self-calming
- Could benefit from guided exploration of feel-good activities
- Enjoy hands-on, interactive activities
